School board member struck in hit-and-run

SHEFFIELD TWP — A Clearview school board member was struck by a car Saturday night, and the driver fled the scene before turning himself in.

Melissa Newsome, who is in the middle of her second term on the Clearview school board, was hit by a red Ford Taurus while crossing South Broadway around 9:37 p.m. Saturday. She was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where she was treated and released.

Her husband, Dave Newsome, said that aside from a few stitches in her lip and a little soreness, his wife is doing well.

An investigator with the Ohio Highway Patrol found that Melissa Newsome, 37, was at fault for the crash and was charged with pedestrian in the roadway. The driver of the Taurus later called the Highway Patrol to admit his role in the accident and was charged with driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident.
