Charles R. “Russ” Ward, 92, of Elyria, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 14, 2011. Russ was born on a shanty boat on the Ohio River in Buffalo District, Brooke County, West Virginia on June 23, 1919.
Russ served as an Assistant Fire Chief for the West Liberty Fire Department in West Virginia for a number of years. He also volunteered at the Center for the Sightless and the Red Cross. Russ retired from Tappan Manufacturing.
Locally he was a member of Jolly 60′s and the Elyria Baptist Church. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Lottie (nee Ritchea) Ward; son, Dennis Ward, Sr. (Judy); daughter, Patricia Goodrich; grandchildren, Brian (Billie Jo), Craig (Dawn), Denice (Andre), Eric, Dennis, Jr. (Kate), and Bridget; great-grandchildren, Brian, Jr., Precious, Dustin, Cortana, Andre, Jr., Jeffrey, Tyler, Haven, Mickenzy, Tiffany, and Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. and Annie (nee LeMasters) Ward.
The family will receive friends Monday, October 17, 2011 from 5 to 8 P.M. and Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from 10 to 11 A.M. at the Elyria Baptist Church, 276 Washington Ave., Elyria. Funeral service will begin at 11 A.M., Tuesday, following the visitation, with Rev. Chuck Leininger officiating. Burial will take place at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst, with Military Honors performed by VFW Post #1079 of Elyria.
