Football: 3 county players named tops in district

Lorain County was all about defense last season.

Three of the Northeastern Lakes all-district defensive players of the year hailed from the county in 2010.

This season, the county flipped to the other side of the ball and three seniors were named the district’s Offensive Players of the Year on Wednesday.

With a bumper crop of first-team selections, the county was led by Avon quarterback Justin O’Rourke in Division II, Firelands quarterback Kyle Smith in Division III and Wellington running back Clay Wright in Division IV. All three players earn automatic spots on the All-Ohio first teams.

Four county coaches were named NE Lakes district Coach of the Year — Elyria’s Kevin Fell in Division I, Avon’s Mike Elder in Division II, Firelands’ Mike Passerrello in Division III and Wellington’s Matt Stoll in Division IV.

“We had 21 players make the all-county team, so to have eight make the all-district first team means people are rewarding us for our hard work,” said O’Rourke, whose Eagles are the lone county team still alive in the postseason. “It’s awesome … it’s great news. But right now we’re focused on the team, not individual awards.”

O’Rourke follows in the footsteps of brother Ryan, who now stars at Baldwin-Wallace, as an All-Ohio first-teamer his senior season. Justin did it by passing for 1,806 yards and 22 touchdowns. He led the Eagles to a 9-1 regular season and two playoff victories. Avon faces Tiffin Columbian on Friday night in the regional championship.

Firelands turned in its best season in nearly four decades and earned its first-ever postseason berth. Four teammates joined Smith on the all-district first team, but it was Smith’s eye-popping all-around numbers that got him the extra honor.

Smith threw for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns, rushed for 705 yards and 10 touchdowns and was one of the Falcons’ top defenders. He was named the division’s first-team athlete, a rarity for the eventual player of the year.

“It’s nice to see that people took notice of how much we put into this season,” Smith said. “We came in from the start and we worked hard, no excuses. I wasn’t looking for individual honors this year, but everyone on my team performed well and gave me the chance to do well, too.”

Elyria went 7-3 this season, had the top offense in the Northeast Ohio Conference’s River Division and landed five players on the all-district first team.

“If anyone’s wondering how I won the coach of the year, those five guys are the reason,” Fell said. “The seniors had a great year and to put five on the all-district team shows we had some talent.

“But that’s just Step 1 … it’s a building block. Those seniors deserve an awful lot of credit for buying in to what we were doing and helping out with the underclassmen.”

Fell took over the Pioneers program last season, after four years of running the Amherst Comets. He’s seen football grow in Lorain County and said he’s not surprised so many athletes landed on the all-district teams this season.

“It was a banner year for Lorain County,” Fell said. “Firelands had that remarkable season, Avon’s been a team to admire the last few years and there were so many other teams that seemed to get overlooked.

“It’s an exciting time for Lorain County football, and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
