Man gets 8 years for rape of Lorain woman

ELYRIA — A Cleveland man who raped a 67-year-old Lorain woman inside her home was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison.

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Miraldi also classified 52-year-old Jeremiah Charlton as a sex offender who must register his address with authorities for the rest of his life once he is released from prison.

Charlton defended himself during most of his trial earlier this year, and a jury found him guilty of rape.

According to police, Charlton met his victim while she was mowing her lawn on May 28. She thought he was in the medical field because he was wearing scrubs. She let him inside her house to treat her sick dog.

Once inside, the woman told police, Charlton tried to remove her housecoat, but she went upstairs to use the bathroom. When she came out, he sexually assaulted her.

When the woman’s son and daughter came to the house, they found Charlton in the living room, and he gave them his name before leaving. He told police that the sex was consensual.
