Lorain man arrested after leading police on chase to South Amherst

LORAIN — A Lorain man was arrested after leading police on a chase through Lorain, Amherst and South Amherst shortly after midnight Thursday, according to a Lorain police report.

Agosto Lopez

Yosmael Agosto Lopez, 28, of the 600 block of 13th St., was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to comply with a police signal, reckless operation, possession of Oxycodone, open container, a red light violation, expired plates and driving under a suspended license.

Police observed a 1991 green Honda Civic go through a red light at West 21st Street and Reid Avenue, according to the report.

As the car went through the intersection, the wheels left the ground, and it forced another car off the road to avoid being hit, the report stated.

Officers stopped the vehicle near West 23rd Street and Reid Avenue, and asked the driver to turn off the car and get out of the vehicle. The driver opened the door, but did not shut off the car or get out, and instead pulled away and accelerated to over 50 mph along Reid Avenue, the report said.

Police wrote that the vehicle was driving on both sides of the road and did not obey any posted stop signs or speed limits. The car turned on Broadway and accelerated between 80 and 90 mph, according to the report.

The car turned onto various streets, passing through Amherst and South Amherst. The Ohio State Highway patrol tried to use a stop strip at Garfield and Pyle roads but the car evaded it. A spike strip was used a second time at Quarry Road and state Route 511. It punctured the front left tire and the vehicle was stopped in the 51800 block of state Route 113.

Agosto Lopez was found to have six Oxycodone pills in his right front pocket and an open bottle of brandy in the front vehicle compartment.

He told police he was sorry for running and added that he had been smoking marijuana and taken some Vicodin and had several shots of brandy.

A male passenger said he had tried to jump from the vehicle several times and asked Agosto Lopez to stop the vehicle.
