Woman rushed to hospital after crash

NEW RUSSIA TWP. — A 56-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital after she was involved in an accident this afternoon.

The accident, which occurred about 12:40 p.m., happened at the intersection of Oberlin and Butternut Ridge roads, just north of Oberlin.

John McCloskey, 49, of Elyria was eastbound on Butternut Ridge in his gray pickup truck when firefighters say he failed to stop for the stop sign at Oberlin Road.

The woman, who authorities haven’t named yet, was northbound in a silver Ford Escape on Oberlin Road.

It took firefighters about 15 minutes to remove the woman from her vehicle, Oberlin Fire Chief Dennis Kirin said. She was taken to Mercy Allen Medical Center, where a MetroHealth LifeFlight crew was being transported via ambulance to meet her because the helicopter is unable to fly today.

The woman had injuries to a hand and her head, according to first responders.

McCloskey said he pulled over immediately after the accident to help the woman. He said he took his sweatshirt off and wrapped her head in it and tried to keep her calm until help arrived.
