AMHERST — Balance, depth and record-setting performances by their two sprint relays propelled the Amherst girls to their first Southwestern Conference championship since 2001 on Friday at Richard S. Cooley Track.
Amherst scored 124 points as it held off second-place Avon Lake (108). Brecksville was third (98).
Junior Sher Champe lit the spark for the Comets by winning the 100 meters over North Olmsted junior Becky Szabo, 12.71 to 12.82. She later teamed with Kaitlyn Given, Becki Stuckart and Lindsay Sands to win the 800-meter relay in a school-record 1:43.85.
Champe then combined talents with Bakita Hill, Lauren Keene and Given for meet and school records in the 400 relay. Their time of 49.58 broke Bay’s mark of 49.9 set in 1982 It It was the oldest meet record on the girls side.
“It was kind of an emotional roller coaster because we didn’t place anyone in the pole vault and Champe false-started in the 200 prelims (on Wednesday),” Amherst coach Rob Glatz said. “But we had three girls place in the 300 hurdles and three girls place in long jump.”
That depth was the difference for the Amherst girls.
“We decided early in the season that it would be great to pull off the SWCs for Mrs. Elsasser,” said Champe, the Amherst girls’ first SWC 100-meter champ since Mary Odafe in 2007. “Coach Glatz said it would be amazing and a nice tribute if we won the meet for her. We announced to the student body on our student-run television station. Everyone knew we wanted to win the meet for her.”
Darline Elsasser, an assistant at Amherst for more than 30 years, is retiring from coaching and teaching at the end of the school year. She is the wife of former Amherst coach Dick Elsasser.
Amherst clinched the meet with strong finishes in the last two events. Junior Emily Johnson was second in the 3,200 (11:26.89), while the 1,600 relay of Riley Schenk, Lexi O’Connor, Sarah Fisher and Alexis Szivan (4:03.27) was also second.
Szivan also contributed with a big win in the 800 (2:17.35). Moore was second in both hurdle events to Avon Lake senior Kristin Winkel.
“We really wanted to win for Mrs. Elsasser,” said Sands, who was second in the 400 (57.60) and fifth in the 200 (26.91). “We really wanted to win it for her so that she could leave on a good note and be happy.”
The SWC championship was the fifth overall for the Amherst girls and first since winning three straight from 1999-2001.
Avon Lake senior Katy Link won SWC titles in the 1,600 (5:07.93) and 3,200 (11:20.26) for the third year in a row, while Shoregals junior Christine Bohan added wins in the pole vault (11-0) and discus (120-5) to the shot put (41-9) title she won Wednesday.
Avon Lake senior Jake Young was a double winner, capturing the shot put on Friday with a career-best 56-5 and the discus Wednesday (169-1).
Berea captured the SWC boys title, easily outdistancing two-time defending champ Avon Lake, 135-77. It’s the Braves’ first league title since winning the 2005 Pioneer Conference and its first in the SWC since 1944.
Three-time state champ Donovan Robertson of Berea won both hurdle events as well as the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The four wins give Robertson 13 SWC career titles, breaking the meet record of 11 held by Oberlin’s Bob Bryant (1950-53).
