AVON — Anytime a team can win a conference championship is a good time.
But if that team wins when it’s hosting the meet, it makes it even sweeter.
The Avon boys pulled off that feat Friday, winning their third West Shore Conference track championship with 189 points. North Ridgeville was second with 148.
“This means a lot to us and our community,” said junior Brentten Wiley, who won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and helped the 800 relay break the WSC record. “It really is a great thing to have it here and to be winning it as well.
“It’s been a great day. I worked really hard to get to today, and I’m just really proud of what the outcomes are for me and my teammates. I couldn’t be any happier.”
On the girls side, Vermilion gave Rocky River a fight, but the Pirates won the league title for a seventh time in seven tries.
Wiley, Antonio Orr, Jake Bitter and John DeMarco’s winning time of 1:31.48 broke the record originally set by Avon in 2009 by two-tenths of a second.
Sophomore Austin Fasciana was another multiple winner for the Eagles, taking first in the 3,200 and running the anchor leg in Wednesday’s winning 3,200 relay. He also finished second in the 1,600 behind Bay’s James Fell by a little over a second.
Sophomore Austin Fasciana was another multiple winner for the Eagles, taking first in the 3,200 and running the anchor leg in Wednesday’s winning 3,200 relay. He also finished second in the 1,600 behind Bay’s James Fell by a little over a second.
“I do feel really good about my performance,” said Fasciana, who won the 3,200 in 10:10.47. “This is truly the best of the best in our conference meet, and everyone ran and performed really well today. I had a good day Wednesday in the 4-by-8 and a good day today in the mile and the two mile.
“Our goal coming into this meet was to take at least second in our individual events and to win our relays. I think we succeeded for the most part, which is why we were able to win.”
Paul Sturm won the discus with a toss of 125 feet, 7 inches to help the Eagles’ cause.
“It feels great,” Avon coach Scott Ulery said. “One of our goals coming into this season was to win the conference championship as a team.”
Ulery also credited senior Tyler Linchak — a last-minute replacement in the third-place 400 relay and the runner-up 1,600 relay — for his performances.
The North Ridgeville boys did their part to steal some of the Eagles’ thunder, setting four meet records and winning six events.
Zach Bowden broke the WSC record in the 100 dash with a time of 11.03 seconds and helped David Bowden, Christian Watkins and Paul Sonego break the 400 relay record by full second with a time of 43.64.
“A lot of first places today,” Bowden said. “We were a bad handoff away from winning the 4-by-2 as well. I gave it my all, and we all gave it our all today.”
Sonego broke the 400 record by 1.13 seconds, winning the event in 50.13. He also ran the anchor leg in the record-setting 1,600 relay (3:29.44).
The Rangers’ Mitch Bugala added a win in the shot put with a toss of 50-1.
Vermilion standout Emily Cunningham made her final WSC meet memorable, breaking records in three of the four events she won, and setting the 100 record during Wednesday’s preliminaries.
Cunningham swept the 100 and 200, breaking her own WSC record in the 200 by nine-hundredths of a second, while running the anchor legs in the record-setting 400 and 800 relay victories.
“I definitely didn’t expect to do as well as I did,” she said. “I know that’s not good to say about yourself, but I kind of lowered my expectations coming in. I’m really excited about my performances, especially in the prelims.”
Sophomore Hannah Bartilome was also a part of both record relays, and also broke records in the high jump (5-4) and long jump (16-10.5) to help the Sailors.
“We broke our school record in the 4-by-2 by just over two seconds, which is crazy for this time of year,” she said.
