Driver charged with hitting infant

ELYRIA — A Lorain man was indicted on charges of vehicular assault and driving under suspension for allegedly running over an 18-month-old boy March 18 in Lorain.

John Carter, 37, wasn’t charged with fleeing the scene of the accident because he initially had stopped, Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will said.

The evidence, Will said, indicated that people at the scene became hostile toward Carter, and someone told him to leave. Will said Carter later returned to the scene.

Police have said Carter was backing down the driveway when he struck Miguel “Mikey” Romero, who according to family suffered a light skull fracture.

Mike Kinlin, Carter’s attorney, has called what happened “a simple accident.”
