Mary Jane McPhillips

Mrs. Mary Jane C. McPhillips (nee Zahratka), 76, of Wakeman, died Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 9, 1936 in Mather, Pennsylvania, and had been a Wakeman resident for the past 38 years, moving from Lorain.

Mary Jane had worked for Lorain Telephone Company as an operator and also in the collections department. Mary Jane had also worked at May Company in Sheffield, Elcor in Elyria, and had volunteered at New Life Hospice, Elyria.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion and enjoyed fishing, playing Bingo, canning, traveling to Las Vegas to watch the shows and Hawaii. She was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. She also enjoyed wintering in Bradenton, Florida, and she was happiest when her family was around her.

She is survived by her sons, William M. (Susan) McPhillips of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Timothy J. McPhillips of Wakeman; daughter, Colleen M. (David) Burroughs of Thurman, Iowa, Celeste M. (Donald) Morris of Vermilion, and Julianne M. (Daniel) Umstott of Brookpark; grandchildren, Jennifer Urbansky, Mari Williams, Donald Morris, Jr., Michelle Morris, Corey Umstott, and Anna Umstott; great grandchildren, Alexandra Urbansky, Thomas Urbansky, and Emmeline Williams; brothers, Michael, Robert, and Richard Zahratka; and sisters, Louise Urda, Katherine McDermott, and Diane Zahratka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. McPhillips in 2005; parents, Michael and Catherine (nee Kurtyka) Zahratka; brother, John Zahratka; and sisters, Dorothy Paskvan and Patricia Weisheit.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 28, 2012 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St., Vermilion, where there will be a Christian wake Service at 6:30 P.M. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday, June 29, 2012 at 9:30 A.M. followed by at 10 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St., Vermilion. The Reverend Ron Brickner will officiate. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
