Vermilion police dog dies


VERMILION – Vermilion Police K-9 Andy passed away Tuesday after the dog sustained injuries from a training exercise.

According to a press release, Andy fell and sustained injuries during a training exercise Tuesday evening.

Funeral services will be held Saturday in Vermilion with details being released at a later time. The incident is currently under investigation, according to Police Chief Chris Hartung.

According to the Vermilion Police Department’s website, the German Shepherd came to the police department on April 1, 2011. He was 4 years old and imported from Germany, where he was raised to become a Police K-9.

Andy’s given German name was Mailo Vom Hinterscholb. He was given his “American” name in memory of Sandusky Police Officer Andrew Dunn, who was shot and killed in the line of duty on Feb. 19, 2011.

Andy was certified in narcotics, tracking and patrol duties.
