Sofia Rigo (nee Smolka), 95, of Lorain, died Saturday, June 30, 2012, at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, following a lengthy illness. Born May 27, 1917 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, she came to Lorain in 1920, where she has lived since.
Sofia graduated from Lorain High School and the Academy of Beauty Culture in Cleveland. Before getting married in 1942, she worked as a beautician. Following 1942, she worked part time as a beautician. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Lorain, and the Marian Guild of the church. She enjoyed painting.
Surviving is her dear friend, Judith Trini of Syracuse, New York; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, John S. Rigo in 2004; brothers, John in 1976 and Thomas in 1999; sisters, Anne Smolka in 2007, Franciscan Sister Mary Lambert (Margaret) Smolka in 2001, Mary Takacs in 1988, Helen Kardos in 1998, and Georgeanna Smolka in 1980.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 5, 2012, from 10 A.M., until the time of Mass at 11 A.M., at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave,. Lorain. Reverend Father Richard Hudak, Pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
