AVON LAKE — A rescue effort for a man report missing near the deadly discharge channel by the Avon Lake power plant near Miller Road Park is under way.
At 10 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter and vessel and at least one Avon Lake firefighter on a Jetski were searching for the man, who was reported missing around 8:30 p.m.
The strong current by the plant led to the death of a 17-year-old you in August. Another man drowned in the channel in 2009, and three people downed there in 2007.
“One of the saddest things about this is usually, by the time the call is made, it is so frustratingly late,” said Gary Gerrone, Avon Lake recreation director.
Distraught relatives of the man said he was 23 years old but didn’t want to give his name.
“I can’t believe this is happening,” said one tearful relative.
Rescue efforts were continuing at 10 p.m.
