As summer comes to Northeast Ohio, many homeowners will be contemplating an upgrade to a high-efficiency A/C system. When it comes time to buy a new cooling system for your home, advances in HVAC technology over the past decade can add up to significant savings and improvements in home comfort.

When installed by a knowledgeable professional, an upgrade to high-efficiency A/C will do a much better job at cooling your home than an older unit, while using far less energy. Often, a high-efficiency upgrade will allow a homeowner to downsize his or her cooling system, without losing any comfort. Proper sizing is important to long-term benefits when you upgrade to a high-efficiency A/C system. If you simply replace your current air conditioner with one the same size, you’ll likely get a model that’s too big for your needs. This can result in frequent on-and-off cycling, and consequently, poor humidity control. With a properly sized high-efficiency air conditioner, you should escape having to deal with the discomfort that comes with humid air, as well as the mold and mildew issues that moisture brings with it.

Homeowners will also enjoy long-term energy savings when they upgrade to high-efficiency A/C. According to the federal Energy Star program, a modern high-efficiency air conditioner will use 30 to 50 percent less energy than a comparable model from the 1970s, and result in anywhere from 20 to 40 percent savings in cooling costs from even a decade ago. This reduction in energy usage that comes from a high-efficiency cooling system can lead to significant savings, eventually allowing the equipment to pay for itself.
