LORAIN — A prisoner at the Lorain City Jail was found dead around lunchtime Wednesday.
Lorain County Coroner Dr. Stephen Evans said it appears that Barry Williams, 47, died of natural causes, possibly because of a heart attack, but an autopsy is scheduled for today.
“Our initial impression is he died of natural causes,” Evans said. “There’s no evidence of suicide or foul play.”
Lorain police Lt. Mark Carpentiere said Williams had been booked into the jail on Sunday on a charge of violating a protection order, although he didn’t have details of the arrest Wednesday evening.
Evans said that Williams went to bed Tuesday night and his fellow inmates reported hearing him breathing overnight.
Williams didn’t get up for breakfast, and Evans said it wasn’t until lunchtime when jail staff went to get him up so he could eat.
When jail personnel touched him, Evans said, Williams was already dead.
Carpentiere said it’s not unusual for prisoners to skip meals or spend all day in bed.
Evans said Williams’ family lives outside the immediate area.
