The Venom was too strong for the Drug.
No team this summer has been a match for the Sheffield Venom, which ran its record to 21-0 with a 11-0 victory over Midview Drug in a Class F (ages 13-14) Ohio Hot Stove district championship game Saturday.
Brad Hughes pitched his second straight no-hitter. Hughes faced 20 batters in six innings, allowing two walks and three Midview hitters to put the ball in play while striking out 15.
Hughes didn’t allow a ball to be hit within the foul lines until the fourth inning. He struck out eight in a row in one stretch.
“I can go to Brad every time,” Venom manager Mark Racz said. “Brad knows where every pitch is going. He’s that consistent.”
Hughes, a left-hander, is 7-0 this season. The Venom, meanwhile, have a 42-1 record over the past two seasons.
Ray Goostree gave the Venom all the offense it required when he clobbered an opposite-field home run way over the right-field fence to lead off the game.
Goostree had three more hits and another run batted in. Cameron Drew had three hits, while James Rickard and Crew Anderson each had two hits and two RBIs. The Venom collected 12 hits.
“We hit,” Racz said. “That’s what we do. We led off with a home run and it just got everyone going. Our pitching is good, but hitting is what we’re about.”
The Venom was one of three teams that won regional championships Saturday at North Ridgeville Palmer Field. North Ridgeville Family Dentistry survived an 8-7 thriller with the South Amherst Crushers in Class G (11-12), and the Midview Mayhem defeated Vermilion, 14-4. Columbia Viccarone gained a district title with a 20-6 victory over the Ohio Dawgz in Class F at Reservoir Park in Grafton.
Gavin Dietrich’s run-scoring single broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning and gave Family Dentistry the lead for good. North Ridgeville added three unearned runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for an 8-3 lead.
The Crushers rallied in the bottom of the seventh. John Gall smacked a bases-loaded triple to make it 8-6 with one out and scored on a wild pitch before North Ridgeville managed to escape.
“This is the first step in a long journey,” North Ridgeville manager Joe Romito said. “And when we were up 8-3 I knew (South Amherst) wouldn’t die. They weren’t going away. They have some good boys who can hit.”
M.J. Smith had three hits for Family Dentistry (22-1). Jeremy Jackson was the winning pitcher.
Jesse Rohal hit a home run and Bryce Sanders collected four hits for the Mayhem, which jumped out to a 12-0 lead.
Connor Bansek and Andrew Shaver had three hits apiece and Rohal and Jakub Mueller had two hits each for the Mayhem (22-1). Ethan Clark gave Vermilion its runs with a grand slam.
One of the most exciting games of the day was Columbia’s 4-3 victory over Buckeyefechko in Class EE (15-16) play. Columbia scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win.
Adam Sasala singled and went to third on an outfield error. Tyler Edmisten singled him home, Zach Tanner walked and Ben Verbus delivered a single to score Edmisten with the winning run.
Columbia had entered the seventh leading 2-1, but gave Buckeye a pair of runs in the top half of the inning.
In other games won by Lorain County teams, Columbia Kile Construction scored eight times in the seventh inning in an 18-8 victory over Abraham Ford in Class H, and Keystone Sturgill Drywall avoided elimination in Class E with a 7-3 victory over the Firestone Park Rams in a losers bracket game.
Kile Construction was losing 6-0 after one inning before rallying. Charlie Simon was the winner, whie Josh Morlock and Mike Verbus had two hits each.
Sturgill scored six runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. David Ruse had two hits, two runs and two RBIs for Keystone.
