This latest time was in a Class G (ages 11-12) semifinal Saturday at Palmer Field. North Ridgeville trailed the Medina Indians 4-0 and 8-3 before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 12-9 victory and a berth in today’s regional final.
North Ridgeville spotted Medina a 4-0 lead after a half-inning.
“After the first inning we played well,” North Ridgeville manager Joe Romito said. “They brought in their big kid to pitch, and he can really bring it. But we hit him. We weren’t afraid to go after him.”
Owen Albers was the winning pitcher, throwing the final four innings.
“I cannot say enough about Owen,” Romito added. “One run in four innings is great pitching at our level.”
Scott Millgard had two hits and three runs batted in for Family Dentistry, including two RBIs on his sixth-inning single that scored the 11th and 12th runs.
Albers had a double and a triple and knocked in two runs. Jeremy Jackson smacked two doubles for North Ridgeville.
North Ridgeville Family Dentistry’s opponent is the Canton Reds, who outlasted Columbia Morgan 4-3 in nine innings. Game time is 3 p.m., with the winner earning a trip to the state championship in Alliance next weekend.
Columbia trailed Canton 2-0 after one before tying the score on three straight singles by Jake Garrow, Jimmy Sprinkle and Alec Paine plus a wild pitch. Mike Jacobucci’s sacrifice fly to right field scored a run to give Columbia a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth, but the Reds tied it with a run in their half of the inning.
Midview Mayhem will play for a regional title in Class H (ages 9-10). The Mayhem pulled away from a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning and defeated Buckeye GPM, 12-5.
Connor Bansek broke the tie by scoring on a two-base error. Jacob Landers made it 5-3 with a single to score Bryce Sanders.
The Mayhem added a run in the fifth and six in the sixth inning. Landers was the winning pitcher in relief of Andrew Shaver. The two combined to strike out 10.
The Mayhem, last year’s Class HH (age 9) champion, meet the Lake Phillies, a 16-4 winner over the Lorain Clippers, today at noon at Palmer Field.
The Sheffield Venom remained unbeaten in Class F (age 13-14) by having an easy time with Columbia Viccarone, 16-2. Jake Lacer pitched a five-inning one-hitter and had two doubles. Ray Goostree had a single and a triple and three RBIs, Drew Cameron had three hits while James Rickard and Mickey O’Neill drove in two runs each.
Venom’s opponent will be the North Ridgeville Stars, who beat South Amherst/Firelands 9-5. Game time is 2 p.m. in North Ridgeville.
The Stars opened a 4-0 lead after an inning and never trailed. Marty Bailey was the winning pitcher, with relief from Tyler Rowe. Jack McTaggart had two hits and Ryan Bennett made a great catch of a line drive with a runner on base for the second out of the seventh inning.
The South Amherst/Firelands Raptors earned a spot in the Class FF-1 (age 13) regional final with a 10-0 victory over the Vermilion Vipers. Daniel Hribal was the winning pitcher, going the distance in five innings and striking out eight. Colin Myers hit a home run and Nathan Kovach had two hits for South Amherst.
The Raptors meet Brit’s Deli, an 11-0 winner over Columbia Cottom, today at 5:30 in North Ridgeville.
Midview North Cavanaugh will take on the Ellet Indians this afternoon in a Class FF-2 final at 4:30. Cavanaugh routed the Ravenna Snappers 20-1, while Ellet beat the North Ridgeville Rangers 15-9.
Keystone Sturgill Drywall kept its hopes for a bid to the state championships in Class E (ages 15-18) alive with an 8-2 victory over Plain Local Better Built. Jared Pierce pitched six innings, allowed four hits and one earned run and struck out 14.
Troy Piazza and David Ruse had two runs batted in apiece. Piazza and Jack Richards had two hits each. Keystone plays Alliance Stanley Steemer this morning at 11:30.
One Lorain County team made it to the Class EE (ages 15-16) state championships next weekend. The North Ridgeville Rangers beat Crestwood Mantua 9-3 in an EE-3 final Saturday at Akron’s Patterson Park.
