OGSO state tournament: Six Lorain County teams make it to semifinals

WELLINGTON — The Ohio Girls Softball Organization state tournament is back in Lorain County for the first time in three years and the teams from Columbia and LaGrange made the most out of the home-field advantage.

Columbia advanced teams in Class B (12-and-under) and C (14-and-under) and LaGrange advanced two Class B teams in Saturday quarterfinal action at Wellington Community Park.

In Class A (10-and-under), a pair of Lorain County teams, Amherst Wranglers and Wellington Heat were winners.

It will be an all-Keystone semifinal today at 4 p.m. in Class B after Keystone Kohlmyers defeated Mogadore 8-2 and Keystone Halleen Kia defeated Labrae 7-2. Lexi Gunter had an inside-the-park home run in Kohlmyers’ four-run fourth inning. Kodi Akers had three hits for Kohlmyers and Didi Rivera had a pair of singles as part of a10-hit barrage.

McKenzie Carter led Halleen Kia with three runs scored, while Alexis Marquis pitched a one-hitter, striking out 12.

Allison Bouscher was the star in the Columbia Crushers’ 8-3 win over Garrettsville Garfield Photo. Bouscher had three hits, including two triples. She also pitched a complete game, striking out 10. Columbia and Brimfield will meet in the semifinals today at 1 p.m.

Also in Class B, Brimfield mounted one of the biggest comebacks in OGSO history, coming from 16 runs down to defeat Champion 17-16 in eight innings.

Champion extended its lead to 16-0 in the fourth inning and was thinking mercy rule when Brimfield scored seven runs in the fourth to extend the game. The Falcons then scored five more times in the sixth and tied the game at 16 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the top half of the eighth, the Falcons won it on a two-out infield single off the bat of Olivia Semler. Champion, which scored 10 times in the top half of the first inning, was led by Savannah Dodrill, who had two hits, two walks and three runs scored.

Class A

Bryanna Rivas hit a home run and Roslyn Hancock and Delaney Stojkov each had two hits as the Amherst Wranglers defeated the Garrettsville Eagles 8-0. Amherst’s opponent in today’s semifinals will be the Bristol Panthers.

The Panthers scored a run in the seventh to escape with a 2-1 win.

Champion Indians easily handled the Windham Lion’s Club 15-1. Champion had 17 hits in the five inning, mercy-rule game.

Kendal Brasee hit a first-inning home run and Nautica Barber and Haven Wetherbee both had two hits as the Wellington Heat defeated Suffield 13-1. Barber was also the winning pitcher for Wellington, striking out 10 in five innings.

Wellington and Champion will meet in today’s second semifinal.

Class C

The Columbia Raiders earned a trip to the semifinals with a 7-3 win over Deerfield. Shawn Hodson had two hits for Columbia, while Alison Schafer was the winning pitcher.

Next up for Columbia will be Buckeye-Johnson, 8-3 winners over the Ravenna Lady Ravens.

Grafton Verizon Wireless saw its tournament run come to end with a 8-1 loss to the Garrettsville Jags. Allison Volney had two hits, one of which was a triple, in a losing effort for Grafton. Garrettsville pounded out 10 hits and got a 12-strikeout performance from pitcher Madison Geddes.

Next up for Garrettsville will be the Bristol Diamond Devils, who were 10-2 winners over Mogadore. The Diamond Devils had 14 hits with Ashlyn Slusher leading the way with three singles. Autumn Miller also had a double and a triple.
