He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served on P.T. Boats during WWII. He married his sweetheart, Eileen K. Miller on October 14, 1944. Jack was discharged from the Navy on November 13, 1945 as a Motor Machinist first class. Jack was a Machine Specialist (Automatic Screw Machines), both in Ohio and California, and retired from Rainbird Sprinkler Mfg. Co. on June 1, 1983, and moved to Tavares, Florida. He and his wife ran a Ceramic Shop on Old 441 in Tavares, Florida for about 10 years.
Jack was very active in Veteran’s affairs. He was a Commander of the D.A.V. Chapter 134 for two years in Mt. Dora, Florida. He was instrumental in merging Chapter 134 with Chapter 87 in Leesburg, Florida. He was also a Commander of District 6 of the D.A.V. for two years, Commander of American Legion Post 35 in Mt. Dora, Florida for two years, where there is now a room dedicated in Jack’s honor, and Chef de Gare of Voiture 400 40 & 8 of Mt. Dora, Florida for two years. He was most proud of being Service Officer of Post 35 for many years. He was happiest helping Veterans. Also he was Chairman for Nurses Training in the 40 & 8 Voiture 400 and chaired a P.T. Boaters breakfast the first Friday of every month since 1989.
His wife, Eileen of 59 years, 10 months and 15 days preceded Jack in death. He is survived by his son, John Shuttleworth of Tavares, Florida; 15 nieces and nephews; two sister-in-laws and two brother-in-laws. He loved them all dearly.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 from 5 to 7 P.M. at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, Tavares, Florida. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 9 A.M. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Mt. Dora, Florida. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
