LORAIN — It was inevitable that the tricky breeze swirling around the Pipe Yard on Tuesday night was going to play havoc with somebody.
That somebody was Sam Alvis, the rightfielder of the Lorain County Ironmen. It came in the fifth inning, when what would otherwise have been a lazy fly ball danced and darted in the sky, forcing Alvis to move this way and that, until the ball finally glanced off Alvis’ glove as Alvis was making one final adjustment to try to make the catch.
It gave Giancarlo Brugnoni a double and a run batted in that gave the Chillicothe Paints a 4-2 lead. That proved to be the game’s final run as the Paints beat Lorain County by that score in a Prospect League East Division game.
“When I first saw (the ball) it was over my right shoulder,” Alvis said. “Then it carried away from me. Most of them (fly balls) didn’t carry. That one did. It was just one of those things that happens somtimes.”

It was the only time in the game that it did. The Ironmen fielded nine other fly balls to the outfield cleanly. Chillicothe’s outfielders caught six flies without problems. When the wind did affect balls was when popups that normally would have been in play were turned into foul balls.
“I think the wind just blew the ball father than Sam expected it to go,” Lorain County manager Joe Rhomberg said. “He made a nice try on it. He almost caught it.”
Still, the Ironmen had five innings to try to erase Chillicothe’s lead and could not push across more runs. LC had runners on base in every inning, but were hurt by being caught stealing twice and two double plays.
The second double play occured in the fifth inning as Michael Burke tried to score on a fly ball off the bat of Cody Koch. Aaron Hopper’s throw to the plate was in plenty of time for James Miglin to tag Burke.
“As long as they’re aggressive mistakes, that’s fine with me,” Rhomberg said. “I’d rather have them doing that than not running at all.”
The loss dropped Lorain County to 5-13 for the second half and 13-35 overall. Chillicothe is 29-19 and 11-7 for the second half.
