Luigi “Louis” Basile

Luigi “Lucky Lou” Basile, 86, of Elyria, died peacefully Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at his home, surrounded by family. He was born February 1, 1926 ,in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

Lou enlisted at 17 years of age in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII, delivering goods and supplies to ships throughout various European cities and received an honorable discharge. He was a resident of Elyria since 1954 and was employed for 33 years as a pattern maker at Ford Motor Co. in Brookpark, at which time he retired.

A longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Elyria, he served the church with various duties and responsibilities. He was also a member of Elyria Elks #465; Elyria V.F.W. #1079; Amvets Post 32; American Legion Post 12 and Elyria United Polish Club.

He enjoyed reading, bowling, golf, woodworking and visiting his club and playing tickets.

Lou is survived by daughters, Linda L. Santiago of Lorain, Kathy D. Amos of Elyria and Cynthia L. (Robert, “favorite son-in-law”) Phillips of Fairview Park; son, Brad (Joan) Smith of Elyria; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Margie Vinkler of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Audria P. (nee Smith) Basile in 2003; parents, Orazio and Antoinnette Basile; brothers, Alphonso, Maurice and Paul Basile; and sisters, Emily Borasio and Josephine Troglio.

Friends will be received Friday, July 27, 2012, from 4 until 8 P.M., at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave. Elyria. A funeral service will be 11 A.M., Saturday, July 28, 2012, in the chapel at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria, where Elyria V.F.W. #1079 will conduct military honors. Reverend Jonathan McCleery will officiate.
