Pet alligator taken from Cleveland backyard

CLEVELAND — Authorities acting on a tip found an alligator being kept as a pet in a Cleveland backyard.

The juvenile alligator — 3 to 4 feet long — was discovered in a tub with a metal grate and bricks to keep it from escaping. Animal control officers took the reptile from the home, along with four dogs tethered outside without food or water.

WJW-TV reports that people close to the family say the alligator’s owner is already in jail. A man who lives at the location was arrested on July 29 for domestic violence and resisting arrest. He could now face more charges stemming from possessing the reptile and the treatment of the dogs.

The alligator is on its way to an exotic animal sanctuary.
