Veteran Services Commission rescinds firing of executive director

ELYRIA TWP. — The Lorain County Veteran Services Commission rescinded its firing of Executive Director Don Bates today during a brief public session.

They also appointed the commission’’s chairman, Bob Childers, to serve as acting director without pay.

Bates was fired by the commission last week, but because he also is a service officer he can’’t be terminated without cause. The commission didn’’t follow the proper procedure for firing Bates the first time. He is now on administrative leave with pay.

Childers has previously said the commission has issues with Bates’ running of the agency. Bates has said Childers has made allegations against him, including of altering documents and theft in office.

Bates has denied wrongdoing and promised to fight for his job.

Childers declined to go into more specifics about the issues the commission has with Bates today.

The commission met in a two-hour executive session this morning before reconvening this afternoon in public session to take action on Bates. They then adjourned into executive session to discuss routine business.

A large contingent of veterans is waiting for the commission to come back into public session so they can express their opinions of the situation with Bates.
