Lorain grad to play hoops in college
LORAIN — Madison Stoyka, a Lorain High graduate, has accepted a scholarship to play basketball this year at Wayne State University, a Division II school in Detroit.
Stoyka scored 723 career points and was a third-team all-district and first-team All-Lake Erie League and All-Lorain County selection.
She led the Titans in scoring at 13.3 points a game, assists (3.5) and steals (4.3).
Stoyka, who earned four letters in the sport and was team captain her junior and senior years, will major in diatetics.
Yellow Jacket tennis players honored
Baldwin-Wallace’s 2011-12 men’s and women’s tennis teams and seven of the teams’ members have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for academic excellence.
The Yellow Jackets men’s team had a 3.33 team grade-point average, while the women had a 3.36 gpa.
Senior graduate Alex Trzeciak, from Avon Lake, was honored for having a 3.71 gpa as a mathematics and economics major.
Junior Brad Minrovic had a 3.82 gpa with a major in chemistry, and sophomore Kyle Patterson had a 4.0 as a business administration major.
Vermilion High graduate Emily Brown, a graduated senior, had a 3.6 gpa in accounting and finance. Juniors Rebecca Mittler (Elyria Catholic) and Danielle Reuger had a 3.56 in middle childhood education and a 3.8 in digital media and design, respectively, while sophomore Whitney Yoder had a 3.62 in psychology.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is presented to teams with at least a 3.20 gpa (on a 4.00 scale).
ITA student-athletes must be varsity letterwinners, have a gpa of 3.50 or higher for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present schools for at least two semesters.
Holt among preseason stars
Junior wide receiver/kick return specialist Josiah Holt, a Midview High graduate, and two Baldwin-Wallace teammates have been picked for the 2012 Ohio College Football.com Preseason All-Ohio teams.
Holt, a 2011 All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick who led the Yellow Jackets with 23 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns, was a first-team selection.
He also had eight carries for 51 yards and a touchdown last season and was one of the top NCAA Division III kick return specialists with a 30.7-yard average on 11 returns, including two for touchdowns.
Senior running back Tyler Lohr and senior offensive tackle Clay Wolf were second-team choices in the Ohio College Football Team.com selections.
