Columbia Station man dies, passenger LifeFlighted after accident overnight

COLUMBIA TWP. — A Columbia Station man died died after he crashed his pickup truck overnight on state Route 252.

According to the State Highway Patrol, Dustin C. Phillips, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred just after midnight.

Phillips was driving south on 252 south of Snell Road when he went off the left side of the road, striking a guardrail and tree, according to the patrol. His blue Dodge Ram 1500 went down an embankment and overturned.

Benjamin A. Sarantos, 24, of Chardon, was a passenger in the vehicle. He was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland with non-life-threatening injuries.

Phillips was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Seatbelt usage by Sarantos is unknown at this time.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in this crash.

The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Columbia Township, Eaton Township and Olmsted Falls fire departments, the Lorain County coroner’s office and Dunlap’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
