Hubert C. Bates

Hubert C. Bates, 86, of Amherst, died suddenly, at home, Wednesday, August 15, 2012. He was born June 27, 1926, in Henrietta Township.

Hubert worked as a technician assistant at Oberlin College Geology Dept. for 22 years. He served in the U.S Army Air Force and was stationed in Shemya in the Aleutian Islands. He was a past member of Kipton Community Church, where he taught Sunday School and a current a member of the Pittsfield Community Church. He farmed, worked at Farmers Supply and Watson Hardware. Hubert coached baseball, was a Township Trustee, past president of Firelands Booster Club, and a Cub Scout leader. He enjoyed gardening, travel, reading, bowling, and was a warm advocate for his children.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret V. Bates of Amherst; sons, Kenneth (Darlene) Bates of Vermilion and Kevin (Jean) Bates of Wakeman; daughters, Jo Elene Terry of Willowick and Megan Crockett of Sheffield Lake; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Elma J. Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Carl D. and Mabel K. Bates; and sister, Daphne M. Collins.

A Memorial Service will be 4:30 P.M., Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Pittsfield Community Church in Pittsfield. Pastor Jonathan Cheatham will officiate.
