Irene M. Eichelberger (nee Szekely), 86 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2012, at EMH Healthcare in Elyria, following a lengthy illness. She was born April 30, 1926 in Vermilion. Irene was raised in Vermilion before moving to Amherst, where she had made her home for the last 62 years.
Irene was a seamstress at Mr. Leonardo’s Bridal Shop in Sheffield Center. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. Irene was also a past member of the American Legion Post #118 and lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662, both of Amherst. Her hobbies including sewing, needlepoint and baking wedding cakes. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Janice and Leon Urbin of Amherst, Nina and James Hill of Woodruff, South Carolina; her grandchildren, Michelle and Eric Peterson, Melissa and Johnny Wagoner, Joshua Waters, Kate Freedman, and Tom Urbin; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ralph J. Eichelberger, on October 9, 2009; her daughter, Linda Freedman in 1995; seven brothers and four sisters; and her parents, Joseph and Mary Szekely (nee Szolosi).
Friends may call Thursday, August 30, 2012, from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 P.M., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing Prayers will be held Friday, August 31, 2012, at 9:30 A.M., in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 A.M., from St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. The Reverend Father Michael Denk, Associate Pastor, will be the Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
