LORAIN — A 19-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the chest Sunday.

Police said they received the call around 10:08 p.m. from the man’s friends who said he had been shot in the vicinity of East Erie and Massachusetts avenues.

Police wouldn’t release the man’s name or further details. The man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center before being flown by helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to Herb de la Porte, LifeCare Ambulance vice president.

Around 10:19 p.m., as police were in the area investigating the shooting, a car plunged about 100 yards down a hill onto the beach at Century Park at 1901 W. Erie Ave. and into Lake Erie. The driver of the Volkswagon Jetta wasn’t hurt and said his brakes failed, according to police Sgt. Les Palmer. At 11:50 p.m. a tow truck pulled the Jetta out of the surf and onto the beach as a half-dozen onlookers watched from the park’s parking lot above.

“Oh, my God, look at that,” a woman said as the tow truck, equipped with a winch, slowly pulled the car up the beach.
