James Wesley Davis, 78, of Elyria, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at the New Life Hospice Center in Lorain. He was born September 5, 1934 in Greenwood, South Carolina and moved to Elyria in 1941, at the age of 17.
James worked for General Motors at the Elyria Fisher Guide plant as a tow motor driver and then as a machine operator at the GM plant in Parma. He retired from the Parma plant in 2004, following 41 years of service. James also worked 11 years as a truck driver for the New York Central Railroad in Cleveland.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Elyria, a member of UAW Local 1005, and was formerly on the Board of Directors for LorMet Credit Union as a loan officer, and honorably served in the U.S. Army. He was also a “Mr. Fix-it” and was an avid reader who enjoyed reading several daily newspapers and the newspaper comics.
He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 57 years, Evelyn Davis; his daughter, Andrea (Robert K) Boyd of Lorain; his son, Anthony Davis of Elyria; a sister, Carrie Simpkins of Maryland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
James was preceded in death by a son, James “Jim” Davis Jr.; his parents, Cleo and Jessie Davis; three sisters, Lois Robinson, Lela Frye, and Beaulah Partlow; and three brothers, Louis, Wilbur and John Davis.
Friends may call Friday, September 14, 2012, from 10 A.M., until the time of funeral service at Noon, at Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria. The Reverend Dr. Carl P. Small, Pastor, is officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
