Boys soccer: Sam Weiss scores four goals as Oberlin blanks Columbia

OBERLIN — It was all Sam Weiss on a gorgeous autumn afternoon Saturday at Oberlin High School.
Weiss, a senior tri-captain, did all the scoring in the Phoenix’s 4-0 win over Columbia in a Patriot Athletic Conference Stars Division match.

His first two goals were on free kicks, from 10 yards out with 36:43 left in the first half and from 20 yards out with 16:46 remaining.

Then with just 1:44 left in the half, he scored on a breakaway shot from 10 yards out off an assist by sophomore Dante LaRiccia.

His fourth goal came on another breakaway shot from 25 yards out with 21:10 remaining. Sophomore Sam Levine got the assist on that one.

Weiss, who has lightning speed, had two hat tricks (three goals in a match) earlier this season but never four goals.

“I think I’ve had four goals in a game in the past, but I can’t remember who it was against,” Weiss said.
As for the free-kick goals, you cold say he was ready for those.

“We just worked on free kicks in practice yesterday,” he said. “We were really strong on defense today. We showed very little weakness.”

It was the third shutout for Oberlin, which improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Stars Division, while it was the first time Columbia (3-5, 1-3) has been blanked.

“You look at the shots taken and the game was closer than the final score showed,” said Columbia coach Hank Proctor, noting that both teams had 11. “It was more like a 1-0 or 2-0 type of game. They (Oberlin) played a little quicker than us. They have a real balanced team. Matt (Fox, Oberlin’s coach) does a great job with his guys.”

“We really concentrated on our defense today,” Fox said. “Our senior captain center defenders Liam (McMillin) and Morgan (Bremke) played especially well. They were solid and won every challenge.”

As for Weiss’ four goals: “Sam has a great supporting cast in his teammates but he also creates things himself.”

Oberlin goalkeeper Storm Ferguson had the defensive play of the match when he leaped high and batted away a powerful Columbia shot that had “goal” written all over it.
