Police were sent to a commercial garage, located at 2904 Grove Ave., at 7:36 p.m. Friday after a pick-up truck reportedly hit the building and then left the area. Witnesses at the scene described the vehicle as a blue Dodge Ram, and said a woman had pulled into the parking lot but crashed into the building diagonally.

Officers recovered a headlight and hood ornament from the car that was among the building rubble.

According to a police report, officers later found the driver responsible for the crash after receiving a call from dispatch. The driver, identified as Kelly Williams, 27, was standing next to her truck on East 45th Street and Maple Avenue, surrounded by a group of people.

Williams told police that she left the scene because she was looking for a safe place to pull off the road and call police. Police said the woman was more than two miles from the accident scene, and there was no direct route from the accident scene to her location.

Williams later said she struck a tree near East 45th Street and Maple Avenue, before admitting to hitting the garage and saying she had been in contact with the owner. Police said the owner was not notified until he was contacted by officers.

Police said Williams smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted to drinking earlier in the day. She was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle intoxicated, failure to control, leaving the scene, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.

Police could not perform a valid breath test but said Williams had a BAC over .201 before the test canceled itself.
