Norma Irene Cornelius

Norma Irene Cornelius (nee Barkert), 86, passed away Saturday evening, September 15, 2012, at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria following a brief illness. Norma was born September 28, 1925 in Amherst, where she was raised, graduated from high school and lived the majority of her life.

A member of Saint Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst she was an active member and taught Sunday school for many years. Norma was not only a dedicated housewife and mother but she also worked outside her home first at White Roth Manufacturing in Lorain and later at Nordson Corp in Amherst.

In her spare time Norma enjoyed a variety of activities including needle point and crocheting, traveling and camping. She was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan.

Survivors include her son, Scott Cornelius and his wife Kristen of Sheffield Lake; daughter, Lori Miars of Sterling, Virginia; grandchildren, Angela Sias, JR Cornelius, and Joshua Sutherland; one great grandchild, Robert Sutherland; brother, Less Barkert and his wife Sandy of Brownhelm Twp; sister, Arlene Waryu and her husband Charles of Amherst Twp.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Cornelius on June 15, 2007; parents Albert and Alma Barkert (nee Rhinehart).

Friends may call Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held Friday, September, 21, 2012 at 11 A.M. at St. Peters United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, Pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Peters United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst.
