Elyria mom accused of driving drunk with 1-year-old in car

ELYRIA — An Elyria mom was arrested after police say she drove drunk and left the scene of an accident with her 1-year-old daughter in the car.

Two men who were also in the car were arrested for lying to police about who had been driving.

Michelle Burt, 38, is charged with OVI, OVI test refusal, leaving the scene, driving under suspension, expired plates and assured clear distance.

Dallas Burt, 38, of Elyria and Michael Coffman, 39, of Grafton were both charged with obstructing official business.

According to a police report, Michelle Burt rear-ended a vehicle a little before 7:30 last night at Lake Avenue and Furnace Street and then backed up and drove around the car as if nothing had happened.

The driver of the other car followed Michelle Burt to a home in the 100 block of Blaine Street, where she saw the three exit the car with an infant.

When police arrived, both men insisted that Dallas Burt had been the one driving the car, the report said.

Michelle Burt, whose speech was slurred and who smelled like alcohol, told police that she had had two beers to drink and that she had hit the other car because it slammed on its brakes.

Michelle Burt agreed to take a portable Breathalyzer test, which registered a blood alcohol content of 0.19, more than double the legal limit to drive of 0.08.

All three were taken to the Lorain County Jail.
