Ray Robert Hess, son of Arthur P. and Ruth M. Hess, of Elyria, passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the age of 79. Ray was born April 9, 1933.
He played football for Elyria High and graduated from EHS, after which he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for four years. After his discharge from service, Ray married Jane Birkbeck on October 8, 1955. They lived in Elyria for a few years before moving to Hawaii, returning to Ohio in 1963. The family moved to Columbus, then to California and eventually to Scottsdale, Arizona.
Ray was preceded in death by Jane, his wife of 53 years; and his son, Michael John.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret E. Hess of Scottsdale; brother, Arthur P. Hess, Jr. of Fort Collins, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Mary Margaret O’Donnell (Robert) of Elyria and Dorothy B. Meek (Orville) of Kent, Washington; as well as many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews across the country.
Ray loved fishing and the outdoors, he always had a smile for everyone he met and a story to tell. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be scheduled at a future date.
