The man, Jahari McKay, was charged with theft and obstructing official business. Police said security footage showed McKay enter an office at the Nord Center and steal four laptop computers and a cell phone.

An employee of the IT department told police a total of seven laptops were stolen from his office between Aug. 23 and 31. After the thefts, he installed a video camera to catch the perpetrator in the act.

On Aug. 31, security video showed an 18 to 21-year-old man, wearing a camouflage backpack, enter the building and walk into the elevator without speaking to anyone at the front desk. Employees said the suspect had come in the building on more than one occasion, carrying papers and appeared to be reading them.

An employee told police he believed the man may have had a schematic of the building. Police are investigating to determine whether McKay is involved in all the thefts.

McKay was arrested at a neighbor’s home Monday after McKay fled when officers arrived at his house. Police said McKay was hiding in an upstairs bedroom wearing the same outfit that was seen in the security video.

The shirt and the video were placed into evidence, but according to a police report, the laptops were not recovered.
