OBERLIN — The Oberlin High Marching Band, Oberlin College Taiko and Kendal at Oberlin’s Precision Lawn Chair Drill Team are just some of the performers expected at the 2012 Community Block Party from 1 to 4 p.m. today on Tappan Square.
A collaborative effort of the city, Oberlin College, Kendal at Oberlin residents, and community volunteers, the festivities are designed to showcase groups in the community as well as restaurants and businesses.
“It is a coming-together of the entire Oberlin community,” said Maggie Robinson of the Oberlin College Office of Community and Government Relations.
The block party rain date is Oct. 6.
The event also will showcase performances from a Conservatory of Music jazz group, the Oberlin Community Music School, community gospel choir, Dance Diaspora, OB Jump and Oberlin Capoeira Angola.
Other events include readings from local poets and authors, a bike raffle, face painting, a tour of the trees on Tappan Square, and Day of Creation, with artistic activities and displays from the Allen Memorial Art Museum, the New Union Center for the Arts, and the FAVA Gallery.
“Tastefully Oberlin” will feature food from Aladdin’s Eatery, Bon Appetit, Domino’s Pizza, East of Chicago Pizza, Kendal at Oberlin, Lorenzo’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, Magpie Pizza, the Oberlin Inn, Presti’s of Oberlin, Quick & Delicious, Slow Train Cafe and other local restaurants.
“Marketplace” offers an opportunity for community members to learn more about businesses and organizations in and around Oberlin, including Custom Cleaning Services, Full Circle Fuels and the Oberlin Project.
