ROCKY RIVER — There was plenty of drama but little in the way of surprises at Saturday’s West Shore Conference girls tennis tournament.
Avon made it three conference titles in a row, winning two of the three singles titles and both doubles championships in the event, which was hosted by Rocky River but contested at Tri-City Park and Magnificat High School.
The Eagles, who finished with 38 points, four points better than second-place Rocky River, took the second and third singles title. Abby Schwartz defeated Bay’s Rannie Dong 7-5, 6-4 in second singles, while Halle Mentler had a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win over Rocky River’s Maddie Fitzsimmons.
In doubles, a pair of teams from Avon and Rocky River battled it out in three-set matches.
Avon’s first doubles combo of Annie DeLuca and Maddie Nakon needed a third-set tiebreaker to squeeze out a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(7-4) win over the Pirates tandem of Alex Riegelsberger and Lucy Grierson.
DeLuca and Nakon looked to be in control of the match, easily winning the first set and taking a 2-1 lead in the second set only to watch Riegelsberger and Grierson win the final three games of the second set and the first three games of the final set.
“It was hard to cope with being so dominating in the first set and then beginning to struggle in the second,” said Nakon, a freshman. “We just had to focus on playing the way we played all day to get to the finals.”
The Eagles duo rattled off three straight games to even the set at 3-3 and were serving for the match at
5-4, only to see Riegelsberger and Grierson break their serve and force the tiebreaker.
“I was nervous in that third set,” DeLuca said. “Sometimes I have a hard time keeping my nerves in check but Maddie was able to keep me calm. She is just so easy going out on the court that she settles me down.”
For DeLuca, a junior, it was her third consecutive WSC doubles crown. She won the first two with Melissa Cirilo, who won the second doubles title alongside Riley Monroe later in the day.
“I play really well with Maddie,” DeLuca said. “We have really bonded this season both on and off the court. It means a lot to win again this season with her.”
Cirilo and Monroe won their final against the Rocky River team of Amy Lam and Adrienna Copa by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
“It was important for me that we win today because it’s my senior year,” Cirilo said. “This is my last chance to be here. Both of our doubles teams are really good so I was confident we’d have good results today.”
Monroe, a junior who won a WSC junior varsity title as a singles player last season, said she didn’t feel added pressure Saturday.
“At the beginning of the season I thought about it, but at this point in the season the pressure isn’t bad,” she said. “We practiced hard all week to get ready for this so I felt good coming in.”
The only champion not clad in Avon purple was Bay’s Katy Quillin, who won first singles 6-4, 6-0 over Rocky River’s Isa Quinones.
