Freighter scrapes sheriff’s boat

LORAIN — A Canadian freighter scraped the dock at the U.S. Coast Guard Lorain Station at 110 Alabama Ave. around 7:18 p.m. Wednesday, according to Coast Guard Seaman Jamison Franzen.

The 730-foot ship John D. Leitch was headed toward Lake Erie from the Black River and also hit an empty 33-foot Lorain County Sheriff’s Office patrol boat.

Franzen said the low-speed collision caused relatively minor damage.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Wednesday night.
