Notes: Safety T.J. Ward returns to practice with cast on his thumb

BEREA — Browns strong safety T.J. Ward practiced today after breaking his right thumb Sept. 27 in a loss to the Ravens. He wore a cast on his thumb and hand.

He’s likely to be listed as limited on the injury report released later in the afternoon.

Ward had surgery over the weekend and didn’t practice Monday or Wednesday. His status for Sunday against the Giants will be clearer Friday.

Ward is off to a strong start, leading the team with 27 tackles. He also has a sack and a forced fumble.

If Ward doesn’t play, Usama Young will likely slide over from free safety and Eric Hagg would regain his spot at free safety. Hagg started the first two games but was benched for the last two.

Backup strong safety Ray “Bubba” Ventrone had similar surgery after breaking his thumb in the opener. He missed Week 2 and returned for Week 3.

Backup free safety Tashaun Gipson (knee), receivers Mohamed Massaquoi (hamstring) and Travis Benjamin (hamstring) and tight end Alex Smith (concussion) sat out practice again.
