Fire this morning destroys unit in South Lorain duplex

LORAIN — One side of a South Lorain duplex is a total loss after a fire there this morning.

According to Lt. Ben Weber, Lorain firefighters were called to 1801 E. 34th St. at 5:38 a.m.

They arrived to find a “heavily involved” fire.

He said a resident of 1803 E. 34th St., the other unit in the duplex, was leaving for work when she noticed the fire.

“She went back in and got her son and niece and called the Fire Department,” Weber said.

According to Weber, the residents of 1801 E. 34th are in the process of moving out and were not in the unit. However, he said the 1803 E. 34th resident had heard someone in the unit last night and heard someone running down the stairs this morning.

1803 E. 34th sustained smoke and water damage, Weber said.

Weber estimated damage at $40,000.

He said a cause has not been determined, and the fire remains under investigation. He couldn’t say where in the home the fire started.
