ELYRIA — A Cleveland man who managed to place a fake mechanic’s lien on an Elyria couple’s home from a Michigan prison cell pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges of tampering with records and forgery.
Waukeen Spraggins, 40, was serving time on numerous fraud-related charges when he placed the $15,000 lien on the home of Herman and Rebecca Smith in April 2010. The Smiths’ attorney has previously said that Spraggins never did work at his client’s house and noted that Spraggins was incarcerated at the time he claimed to have done a job for the Smiths.
The couple was unaware of the lien until they were contacted by another man whom Spraggins had sold the lien to for $10,000.
