LORAIN — A report of six to eight gunshots and of a laser beam being pointed at houses and a resident led to the arrest of two men around 6:40 a.m. Saturday.
The incident occurred in the 500 block of West 13th Street, according to a police report. Officer Tabitha Angello wrote that a car with two men in it and the passenger-side door open started to drive away when she approached it on foot. Police stopped the car in a driveway in the 600 block of West 25th Street and said they found a semiautomatic pistol with a red laser light attached to it inside the car. Ten shell casings also were found in the car.
The driver, Hugo Leoner Lopez-Olmedo, was holding half a bottle of cognac when arrested, according to the report. Lopez-Olmedo, 42, of the 600 block of West 25th Street, refused a Breathalyzer test.
Lopez-Olmedo — whom police said is wanted on a Florida drug trafficking warrant — was charged with carrying an open alcohol container in a vehicle, drunken driving and obstructing official business.
Police said passenger Larry Edwards was carrying a small amount of marijuana, and they believe he was carrying the pistol.
Edwards, 23, of the 600 block of West 13th Street, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, handling a weapon while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police said Edwards has two felony convictions.
Both Edwards and Lopez-Olmedo — who is being held for extradition to Florida — are due in Lorain Municipal Court today.
They were being held without bond at Lorain City Jail on Sunday.
