Police warn woman not to talk to strangers

ELYRIA — Police advised a woman not to talk to strangers after she said she drove an unknown intoxicated woman home from Walmart and the woman then took her cell phone so she couldn’t leave.

A 19-year-old Elyria woman and her 20-year-old boyfriend came to the police station at 11:30 p.m. Monday to report the woman had a “weird feeling” about a stranger the two met at Walmart.

The woman told police they met a female in the parking lot of the store who appeared to be intoxicated and could not find her vehicle. She said the two spent two hours looking for the woman’s car and later offered to drive it home for her so she would not drive intoxicated.

After driving the woman’s vehicle to her apartment and helping her unload her groceries, the woman told police she had a “weird feeling” about the situation. The unknown woman took her cell phone and did not allow her to call her boyfriend to come pick her up, she said.

Officers located the woman’s vehicle and spoke with her. She told an officer she met the couple at Walmart and invited them over to her apartment to drink wine with her.

She said the Elyria woman drove her vehicle for her, and the woman’s boyfriend and another man were buying cigarettes and supposed to meet up with them after. She denied taking the woman’s phone and said she was free to leave at any time, but she told officers after inviting the three over, she said she wanted to take the invitation back because they were strangers.

No charges were filed and police advised everyone to be careful of strangers in the future, according to a police report.
