Mary Catherine “Cassie” Rose Zvirblis (nee Derek), 90, of Elyria, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon, following a short illness. Mary Catherine was born February 9, 1922 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Elyria has been her home since 1966.
Mary Catherine worked as a telephone operator for the Bell System in Latrobe and Chicago in the 1940s. She was an active member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and the Ladies Bereavement committee. She loved art and enjoyed painting when she was younger. She was a cat lover and enjoyed reading, card playing with friends, and gardening. Her greatest joy was caring for and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her two sons, Paul Zvirblis of Elyria, John Zvirblis of Lamar, Indiana; daughter, Anne Zvirblis and her husband, Kevin LeFavour of Kent, Washington; five sisters, Rita Derek, Regina “Jeanie” Hile, both of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Marie “Pinky” Joyce of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, Pauline “Polly” Jackson of North Carolina, Bertha Cecelia Schikora of Niles, Michigan; and one brother, Cyril “Jeff” of Latrobe, Pennsylvania; she is also survived by three longtime friends and former neighbors, Doris McDonough, Pat Kuhman, and Audrey Lauer, who together with Mary Catherine were known affectionately as “The Witches of Woodridge.”
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, George, on April 5, 1984; son, Mark on December 31, 2002; three sisters, Teresa Friedline, Colette “Patchy” Zeglin and Josephine Macey; and one brother, Charles “Bud”, all of Latrobe.
Friends may call at the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland St., Elyria, on Monday, October 29, 2012 from 10 A.M. until a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 A.M. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 590 Poplar St., Elyria. Rev. Fr. Frank Kosem, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
