The Lorain County Urban League held its annual gala Saturday, and the event honored local corporations for their philanthropic contributions to the community.
This year’s recipient of the Distinguished Service Award was Dr. Henrie Treadwell, the founding director for Community Voices: Healthcare for the Underserved at Morehouse School of Medicine. Treadwell and her staff have worked extensively with the local Urban League’s Save our Sons diabetes prevention program in creating the SOS curriculum and managing its data.
SOS was piloted in Lorain County as an initiative to educate black men about the health risks of diabetes and to help them lead healthier lives. The success of the program led to a sizable contribution by the National Urban League and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals to fund similar programs in other cities.
The night was also about honoring community corporations for their contributions in the area of philanthropy. The recipients are EMH Regional Healthcare System, Fifth Third Bank, Invacare, Mercy, PolyOne Corp. and Ridge Tool.
