Laurel Jane Stevens (nee Kubishke), 65, of Brownhelm Township, died Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, after a short illness. Laurel was born March 2, 1947, in Amherst. She had been a life long Vermilion and Brownhelm Township resident.
Laurel worked for Ohio Extended Care as a Nurse’s Aid and also worked as a private care nurse. She attended the United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermilion. She was a 1965 Vermilion High School graduate and had been a proud trumpet player for the mighty Sailor Marching Band. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, history, bowling, cats and traveling. She had been President of the Brownhelm PTA, President of the Lake Erie Lanes Monday Night Ladies League, and President of the Rebman Thursday Night Ladies League
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jack Stevens of Amherst; daughter, Jackie (Tony) Heath of Amherst; sisters, Darlene (Frans) Liem of Huber Heights, and Karen (Alan) Ganim of Chardon; brother in law, Doug Stevens of Amherst; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Mary Jane (nee Derby) Kubishke; sons, Lynn Stevens in 1965, Lyle Stevens in 1965, and Craig Frederick Stevens in 1979.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 4, 2012, from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 P.M., at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Funeral services will be Monday, November 5, 2012, 11 A.M., at the funeral home. The Reverend Louis Bertoni will officiate. Interment will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
