Shelters open for Avon Lake residents still without power

AVON LAKE – The American Red Cross will be providing warming centers and shelter on an as-needed basis tonight for any Avon Lake residents who are without power.

According to FirstEnergy’s website, 5,423 Avon Lake residents are currently without power. Many residents are expected to be without power until Sunday or Monday, according to Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka.

Rita Campbell, executive director of the Lorain County Red Cross, said it will open warming centers and shelters tonight on an as-needed basis.

St. Joseph Parish of Avon Lake, located at 32929 Lake Road, will be on stand-by at 4 p.m. and will re-open if it is needed, Campbell said. The parish will serve as a warming center for residents.

Old Firehouse Community Center, located at 100 Avon Belden Road, will be open as a welcome center until 8 p.m. tonight.

Campbell said if anyone needs overnight accommodations due to the cold, they are asked to contact the Avon Lake Fire Department at (440) 933-8305. The Red Cross will open an overnight center if it is needed by the community.
