Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson, 53, of Cleveland, formerly of Elyria, passed away on Monday, October 29, 2012. He was born in Elyria.

He attended the Elyria City Schools and graduated from Elyria West High School in 1978. After graduating from high school, he attended Tennessee State University on a full athletic scholarship. Following college, he played and toured with the Meadow Lark Lemon Bucketeers entertaining and amusing audiences across the country with basketball skits and drills.

He was currently employed as a Corrections Officer with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Detention Center where he had worked for the past 26 years. He was affectionately known as “Big Sam” to many. He was also known during his youth as the “neighborhood paperboy” holding two paper routes simultaneously, one with the Elyria Chronicle Telegram and the other with the Cleveland Press.

He leaves to cherish his memory seven siblings, Lee (Dorothy), Columbus, Barbara (Willie) Berry of Elyria, Margaret (Thomas) Barbee of Oberlin, Beverly (Thomas) Walker, Calvin, Sr. of Elyria and Kenneth of Cleveland; nephews and nieces, Yolanda of Charlotte, North Carolina, Thomas of Jacksonville, Florida, Warren of Elyria, Marco of Oberlin, Calvin, Jr. of Cleveland, Keenan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kassandra of Oberlin, Ashley of Dayton, Kerry of Elyria and Jennie of Raleigh Durham, North Carolina; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elton; mother, Hettie; and nephew, Kevin.

Family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 from 5 to 8 P.M. at Second Baptist Church, 127 Chapman Lane, Elyria, where funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2012 with a viewing at 11 A.M. and service to begin at 12 Noon. Rev. Willie Gardner to officiate. Internment will be in Brookdale Cemetery.
