Elyria district gets $50,000 from FirstEnergy

ELYRIA — An energy contest has resulted in a $50,000 payday for Elyria Schools.

The money, which was symbolically given to school officials Nov. 1 in the form of a big check, is the result of First Energy Solutions’ Thanks a Million contest that ran through the end of October. The contest was pretty simple: a First Energy customer only had to enroll in an electric generation program and they were automatically entered in a contest to win $25,000 prizes.

First Energy not only gave money to residents — in this case, an Elyria resident who wanted to be anonymous won — but it also gave $50,000 to each winner’s local school district to use however they see fit.

Eight Ohio businesses also won $50,000 a piece.

It was a surprise to the district, said Fred Stephens, the district’s treasurer.

“Usually when people call me, they are wondering where the check is,” Stephens said. “Basically, that is the story of my life. But a few weeks ago, I got a call from an Ohio schools official who said, ‘This is your lucky day.’ ”
