The building was burglarized for the second time since Nov. 2, according to Darell Bishop, the Legion’s fiscal officer. Bishop, father of Chronicle-Telegram chief photographer Bruce Bishop, said in an interview that he believes someone hid in the building at 393 Ohio St. when it closed Saturday. He said the burglary didn’t disrupt Veterans Day activities.
A few thousand dollars was stolen from a safe, according to police Officer James Cooley’s report. The burglar, or burglars, tore through drywall with a pry bar or other tool to get into the office where the safe was bolted to the wall.
The prying tool was used to open the safe.
“The doors of the safe were indented with multiple strike marks from being hit with a pry bar or other tool,” Cooley wrote.
Bishop told Cooley that the money stolen was from bar receipts, a fish fry and other fundraising events and the burglary was “devastating” to the Legion’s finances. A few thousand dollars was stolen in the previous burglary.
